Depression should not be invisible.

This Depression Awareness Month, we’re focused on bringing depression into the light. Depression isn’t shameful. And despite being called the “invisible illness,” the realities of depression are often in plain sight.

It’s OK to be seen. It’s OK to ask for help. And it’s OK to not be OK.

5 stars

I was hesitant to go the online therapy route. But I am so glad I did. It was all an easy process and I absolutely adore my therapist. I’ve learned and grown so much.

How to help

4 tips for supporting someone with depression

1. Be present.

A quick call, email, or text a few times a week can show that you care.

2. Be vulnerable.

Talking about your own mental health struggles might help your loved one feel more comfortable voicing theirs.

3. Practice self-care.

As you support your friend or family member, be mindful of your own well-being.

4. Encourage treatment.

Social support can help alleviate symptoms of depression, but it’s not a replacement for professional help.

Depression can feel isolating, but you don’t have to face it alone.

Here is what our clinicians had to say about coping with depression.

Keeping your social connections close is one of the single most effective strategies you can use to combat depression.

If you withdraw from in-person activities but still feel comfortable engaging in live video games and social media, I encourage it. Any connection is still valuable.

I recommend using ‘I’ statements, like saying, ‘I feel really overwhelmed and could use your support,’ which helps you share your feelings without blaming others and encourages more open conversations.

Isolating from friends and family can make feelings of sadness and loneliness even worse, creating a challenging cycle that’s hard to break.
